Welcome

I am an artist, not a writer. My Intent is not to educate, enlighten or inspire but rather to clarify my motivations to myself. I find that when I write down the thoughts and reasons that I take certain paths, it helps me to avoid repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Let's face it, authentic work evolves through a series of mistakes, lessons learned and options eliminated.

I need opinions on experimental piece

“Haviar” 21.5”x 33.5”
polished cement & mixed media on panel

This image is a result of some experimentation with adding different material to the cement and playing with the earthy textures that resulted. I would welcome any opinions on this new direction.

  1. If this is where your going or would like to go then keep pushing your ideas but all i can say is that you have a unique process and outcome happing,I would play on paper for idea's and do what you want to do.
I can see that some of your older pieces could look crafty and you dont want to go there,I think your seeing the difference now.
    Love this new piece.

  2. Thanks David, I knew I could count on you for some great insight. I agree with you about some of my earlier work. I think that "crafty" hit the nail on the head. In this new piece I am trying to be a little more gritty and less polished. In a perfect world I would be able to blend the earthiness of this piece with a the painterly quality of some of my other pieces. Do you feel this piece is in danger of being crafty?

  3. Hi William,
. I don't know if this was pure experimentation or if you had a plan with "Haviar". How long do you have to work with the cement once it's on its base? If it settles quickly then you may want, as David suggested, "to play on paper" first and then go from there. If it takes a while you'd have time to "play" in the cement.

Adding the different materials adds a new direction and interest to your work. I don't think this will lead to being crafty.

  4. Its just my point of view 90% of the work is stunning, some work hasn't got the strength of your top work but that happens to all of us.There is plenty of work on my blog that hasn't got the strength of others , But only a small percent of my work is shown in a gallery and the blog helps the viewer to see where and how i get my results. All my paper work doesn't sell and is only on my blog.

So if i was to be bold and say, Belsar march 23 ,2011 is pushing all the crafty bells for me,but thats the only one that doesn't do anything for me.

I hope i have been helpful,i've never seen work created like yours and im grateful to be able to view it

  6. The Playing on paper is to switch you into mode so that when you start with your process your in MODE understanding the art is coming from a higher force or a letting go of ones self.

  7. Carole, There was no plan, I was trying to get a feel for the possibilities, just shooting in the dark. What I learn from experimenting, hopefully, will give me the tools to help have a plan for future pieces. I basically began "Haviar" expecting it to be a throw-away but ended up liking the results.

Thank you so much for your comments.

  8. David, your opinion and suggestions are very much appreciated and helpful. I am working out here, it seems at times, all alone. Your specific comments are exactly what I need. Thank you for your comment about "Belsar", it gave me a much needed reference point. It is also good to know you feel as I do, that you have to let your self get lost in the moment of creation and surrender to that higher power.

Your input helps more than you know.

  9. I especially like this piece! The marks on the right add such texture and interest...reminds me of barbed wire...I like the little rounds bits of brown in contrast with the creamy texture of the cement...this seems like a great direction you are going in....

  11. this is such an interesting medium you choose to work in and I like where this piece is headed - it has wonderful visual interest, but I say, just keep pushing - there is never a stopping point in exploring your world :)

  12. Thanks Jeane, I am also very impressed with your "Dream Baby" and your work in general. It has that gritty edge that I am trying to find in my work.

  13. This is a good direction to stay with, Bill. It seems very spontaneous and yet discriminating. The contrasts and sensuality of surface are inviting. I like it very much.
